The ideas that end up being central to the design often come from the margins. In this instance, I was hired to help create an attic storage solution for my clients' disorganized book collection.
During an early meeting, one of the clients remarked that she would be happiest if her books could surround her like a warm blanket. Though this statement was intended to be a fantastical aside, it turned into a guiding image for the project.
As we worked with this vision in mind, the three room attic became a single room where the activities of eating, listening to music, sleeping, and even bathing could take place within arm's reach of books.
The unusual open bathroom emphasizes the intimacy of this retreat -- a place where my clients can nurture themselves in a surrounding that reflects who they are and what they love.
